What Are We Really Sending in Our Parcels?

21.3.2026

Behind every parcel, there is often a personal story – from surprises to caring for family.

For many of us, sending and receiving parcels has become an essential part of everyday life. More and more, shipments are not just online purchases – they’re becoming a way to surprise someone, say thank you, or simply remind someone that they’re being thought of.

Shopping habits have changed significantly in recent years, and so has the way we choose to receive our parcels. Alongside practical considerations, the emotional side is increasingly visible – the feeling of waiting, the surprise when opening a parcel, and the thought of the person it’s intended for.

Content creator and food blogger Māra Ziemele shares how parcel sending has become part of people’s daily lives and what hides behind each package.

Parcel Sending as Part of Everyday Life

In Māra’s life, parcels are a regular thing – not only receiving them but also sending them herself.  “There are moments when I receive and send a parcel once a week,” she says. “They aren’t always promotional gifts. Sometimes I simply like to treat myself or my loved ones with something I’ve wanted for a long time.”

Māra recently published a book with her favourite recipes, and she admits that this has become her most frequently sent item.  “I love the idea that the book travels to people. Sometimes it reaches someone who bought it for themselves, and other times – someone receives it as a gift from a friend or family member.”

Not all parcels are books or gifts. Māra also helps prepare shipments for her brother, who makes wooden products. In those cases, secure packaging is especially important.  “Bubble wrap and the possibility to reuse cardboard boxes are our best friends,” Māra laughs. “Before sending, we always doublecheck that everything is safely packed.” She adds that the ability to send and receive via parcel machines helps save valuable time in a busy routine.

When the Parcel’s Conditions Matter

As parcel sending becomes more frequent, practical questions arise – where to receive the parcel, how quickly to pick it up, and how to ensure the contents stay in good condition.

“I always think about keeping my prepared parcel safe. I follow all packing rules so nothing happens during delivery – I believe that says a lot about the sender,” Māra notes.

She often orders practical items for her family: “As a mother, I can’t think only about myself or my work as a content creator. I also need to think about my family’s wellbeing. Of course, I like to treat them, but I also take care of their health, so sometimes I order medical products.”

“These are situations where parcel safety matters even more, so I look for the right solution. I want to receive the product in the same condition it was sent in, so storage conditions matter. Temperature can significantly affect the contents, which is why in such cases I choose SmartPosti services. I feel at ease knowing my purchase is stored in suitable conditions,” she emphasises.

Small Details That Make Every Parcel Special

It’s important to remember that parcels are not just a practical process – sometimes it’s the small details that make each one feel special.

“To be honest, packaging is not the most important thing for me when receiving a parcel, but it’s always nice to see that care and time were put into it. I usually include a small seasonal item with each parcel – something that represents me. I like the feeling of creating emotions.”

Parcels have long been more than just something sent on special occasions – they often help maintain connections with people we don’t get to see often.  “I once sent a memory album to my relatives. Later, we looked through it together, laughed, and reminisced – it was truly beautiful!”

Parcels That Make You Smile

A longawaited parcel almost always brings a special feeling – even more so if it’s a surprise. Māra admits that receiving an unexpected parcel is wonderful, but sending a surprise to someone feels just as good. “I will never forget sending my first published recipe book as a surprise parcel to my friend!”

In the end, parcels often mean more than just delivered items. They may carry a small surprise, care, or simply the wish to brighten someone’s day. Sometimes all it takes is that one moment – opening a parcel and realising that someone thought of you.

According to content creator Māra Ziemele, those are the best parcels:  “You open it – and you just can’t stop smiling!”
